If you are considering buying a home in the burbs, then you need to know the truth about them. Do not go on out-dated information. Understand what they are like today.
Suburbs are not chiefly white. It might have been true at one time, but not anymore. More than 30% of the suburbs in the U.S. Are ethnic minorities.
You may think, unwittingly, as many new home buyers do, that buying a home in the suburbs will save you a lot of money. Do not be fooled. While the price of the home may indeed be lower, the savings will be offset by the cost of transportation getting to every service that is located so far away. Work, school, shopping, medical services, etc… will suck your money away each month. You will spend an additional $1,500 to $4,000 per year living away from services. It works out to be a significant burden. Add to it the tax on your mental stability, driving so far and so often.
The suburbs are not always a great place for kids to grow up. If you are going to buy a home in the suburbs, at least consider the total impact on the life of your kids. They will have to travel to see friends, travel to attend school, travel to hang out at a mall, travel to a library, travel to a concert, and nearly everything else in their lives. Their singular goal as kids will be to grow up and get a car. Nothing will matter to them until they achieve this goal.
